when working with families on setting up a newborn baby session, it's fun to incorporate special items that provide additional context to the baby's narrative.

   last week I had the pleasure of photographing this perfectly gorgeous little man on his sixth day.

as a tribute to the history and culture of his family, mommy had the great idea of photographing him
  with their family's national flags: south africa for daddy, and scotland for grandpa.

the graphic nature and bright colors of the flags provided a stunning backdrop to feature his little frame.

chicago area family photography: the missing months of 2011

it literally has been forever since I've spent time sharing images from recent sessions.

     it's not because I've forgotten, but because I've been busy. really busy. and that's mostly really great news, except when it comes to things like blogs, and keeping up with posting work. or tweeting. or pinning. or sharing anything at all, for that matter.

anyway, it's a new year, and a new day. I plan to stay connected this time . . . we'll see how long that lasts.

in the mean time, here is a little sneak peek of all the fun that I've been hoarding.
     I plan to share more from each of these moments. and soon. so come back and visit whenever you get a chance. knowing you'll be here will be good motivation.

new baby, everything changes. these are the things of life that aren't always so tangible for a two-year-old. maybe some grumpy times are a'coming, but won't it be so fun to grow up together?

you'll think so, eventually.
oh, and don't you worry--there's plenty of love to go around.

 any way you cut it, it's some of the best stuff in life.

newborns are incredible subjects.

it might seem they'd be difficult to work with because they don't 'do' anything, but it's quite the opposite. slow time to split seconds, and focus there. shrink the frame to just one tiny feature. be ready and be patient. unguarded personality waiting to be captured. it may not be the personality they wear for the rest of their days, but there is something present from the first moments of life.

they act without interacting. they emote with every facial contortion, every stretch of their arms, even in the movement of their toes.

these first days are fleeting. being given the chance to capture them, an honor.
